'Happily Ever Before' provides less expensive prom experience

LaRue County’s prom is this Saturday.
Many teens have made reservations for pre-prom dining in Louisville, Bardstown or Bowling Green. Others may be skipping the tradition due to lack of funds or parental concerns, said Linda Lindsey, owner of My Gal Boutique in Hodgenville.
Lindsey, along with Rooney Gray, owner of MAM Candy, is planning an alternate evening for prom-goers that includes a meal by candlelight, photography session and horse-drawn carriage ride – all at MAM in downtown Hodgenville.
The menu will include salad, meat, two vegetables, bread and dessert (drizzled cheesecake and dipped strawberries), prepared and catered by MAM. Service will include china, crystal and fingertip towels.
The “black tie affair” will provide live entertainment, Gray said.
They’re calling the event “Happily Ever Before.”
Reservations are being taken for no more than 40 people.
“There is not a lot of opportunity for 5-star dining in this area,” said Lindsey. “They will be introduced to a fine dining experience.”
The evening begins at 6 with carriage rides around Lincoln Square and ending at Creekfront Park where a professional photographer will be available for portraits. The couples will be returned to MAM for dining.
Tickets are $25 per person and include the meal, carriage ride and session fee for the photographer. Proofs may be viewed the following week and orders for photos placed. Reservations should be made by April 14.
Lindsey, who opened a “gently-used” formal attire shop last fall, said she isn’t sure how the idea will be received by teens but she is getting positive feedback from parents.
Any funds left over from ticket sales will be donated to Project Graduation, Gray said.

Happily Ever Before will conclude before prom begins at 9 p.m.

A sweet family tradition

Missing recipes and family history make up the story of Rooney Mark Gray’s candy shop, MAM Candy in Hodgenville.
Rooney's grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Hart Anderson, made candy in Mount Sterling in the 1920s, about the same time Ruth Hunt of Ruth Hunt Candy Company also made candy.
“In fact they were in competition with each other,” she said.
Bridge clubs were big back then, and the candy served in the clubs was important. Both Elizabeth and Ruth made the candy out of their houses.
In 1932 Elizabeth died. Her recipes were lost by the woman her grandfather later married. The family wasn't sure they’d ever see them again.
After Rooney’s mother, Mary Anderson Mark, grew up and married, she moved to Sideview where a woman named Mandy helped her clean house and take care of her babies.
One day Mandy asked Mary if she ever made Elizabeth's candy. She hadn't. The recipes were lost before she had the chance.
To Mary's surprise, Mandy had them. Mandy and her sister had helped Elizabeth around the house as well, and she allowed them to copy the recipes. They may have been the only other people allowed to do that.
Mandy instructed Mary that Elizabeth's recipes were for family only; then she taught her how to make the candy.
All her life, Rooney would come home to caramels and candy, but it wasn’t until she was 25 and married that Mary allowed her to touch the candy other than eat it. Rooney told her mother that if she didn’t teach her how to make it the family candy making would go to the grave with her.

“So at 25 I got to make my first pullin’ of cream candy, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” Rooney said. “I love pulling it, love seeing people eat it, seeing people smile and then making some more.”
